Leaked Reach Screen Proves Use of Natal?

Monday, 25 Jan 2010 - 20:59PM

It has been rumoured that Halo: Reach could be Natal-enabled when it's released towards the end of the year. And looking at a leaked, in-game screenshot which emerged online today, we think it might just prove that the game utilizes Microsoft's new craze (in the office at least).

First off, look at these two screens below; one from Halo 3, the other from Halo 3: ODST. Notice how the aim of the gun is placed in the centre of the screen in both pictures? And both are clearly firing.

Now, take a look at the below image. The faint red aim (outlined with a red square) is completely off centre, and a lot further towards the left-hand side of the screen. Well, we think it looks a little like the aim seen in such Wii FPS titles as Dead Space: Extraction and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex, in which the aim follows the movement of the controller in a view-box.

Above, is the in-game screenshot which emerged online today.

Of course this could be the reaction to a blast, or just lag. But everyone's entitled to their opinion, and this is ours. An AAA title like Halo: Reach using Natal would show just how confidant Microsoft are of it's motion-sensing abilities, allowing tight control of first person shooters.

LOL morons, It is 100% not fake. Check out the following link if you don't believe me http://www.bungie.net/projects/reach/images.aspx?c=59&i=24479

@wabadaba - How is it fake? It's in the latest edge magazine which features Bungie. There's no way its fake.

I don't think Bungie are stupid enough to hand over the ingame controls to Natal. There's a 1-2 frame time delay whilst Natal calculates position data (Natal runs at 30fps), this would kill response time for an FPS. I do not feel that Natal will be used on ‘hardcore’ FPS games as the only means of control. Here's my educated guess on how Bungie will integrate Natal in Halo: Reach... Remember that Reach seems to be a squad based game. I feel that Natal will be used to order your squad members around during combat. It could be a combination of head/arm gestures and voice recognition. The cursor might be tracking the payers head position or maybe tracking the positioning of the controller/arm. Either way the cursor would highlight targets to attack or highlight positions to move to. Or it could be solely down to voice recognition... similar to Tom Clancys End War. Anyways... that's my guess. You can bet your bottom dollar that Bungie will not gimp the responsiveness of the core gameplay. Seriously... Bungie are not that dumb.

It is fake.... -.- What kind of cursor is that? Its not ace combat... And the gun is not pointing that way. If metroid prime on wii flawlessly can make the gun aim directly at where it says you are aiming then the 360 should to. And dont go, "oh but its not out yet, it will be added". Its not possible to track each finger yet with cameras under $500 and from the cameras point of view your finger would barely move at all. And the camera has noticable lag from what people have said. So not only do most people not care to play a fps on natal but its going to be aggravating due to the cameras lag... If you want a fps with motion controls wii has metriod prime and PS3 will get one eventually for its ultra accurate "wand" or "arc" motion controller which will have 3D tracking.

I hope they dont expect people to even try playing Reach with only your hands and a motion recording device. It absolutely wont work. I do, however, have a solution for such a situation. Copy the Wii and give us a controller designed as an assault rifle. It would be cheap since you dont have to put any sort of tracking device in the peripheral. It would basically just be a plastic gun, which is exactly what Natal needs. All it needs to do is be able to recognize the shape of the gun and BOOM there is your weapon. This is the only way Bungie and Microsoft can succeed with motion controlled FPS games. If they plan on people using Natal like we've seen so far, then they will fail miserably. Its either a plastic gun to aim with or a good ol' regular controller.

From what I saw of Half-Life with Natal, I'd rather see Halo: Reach on Wii, than play it with Natal. The controls looks as loose as a Thai Hooker.
