A patent unearthed by GoRumours (via Slashgear) has pointed toward Microsoft's Kinect having the ability to recognise American Sign Language.
The patent that has been found describes a “gesture keyboarding” system that’s tracked by the special PrimeSense-developed depth camera. Kinect then builds a dynamic wireframe representation – or “skeletal mapping” – of the player’s body, and then tracks that to recognize various gestures and movements.
The ability to understand ASL means Kinect could potentially understand words or even full phrases by using sign language along, for example "...where the user is playing an online multiplayer video game, such as a first person shooter, the game may also support voice chat. Where the user is unable to speak, he may be prevented from joining in the voice chat."
