8 Things To Do In The Just Cause 2 Demo

With just weeks separating us from our copy of Just Cause 2, the demo has been a godsend, allowing us to learn the controls, get a feel for the game, but most importantly, blow stuff up. Our eyes are red and bloody from watching explosions all day long, so we thought we’d share the best bits of the Just Cause 2 demo. Why? Just ‘Cause.
Dual-wield weapons
Surprisingly few people know about this feature – weapon selection is navigated via the arrow buttons, with left being for grenades, down for the black market, up for two-handed guns and right for your basic one-handed shooter. However, by holding down the right button, you can dual wield SMGs or Pistols, or even a mix of the two, provided you have one of each. You can’t grapple, but you can unleash all sorts of hell.
Blow up a crane
To the north of the Reaper base (you’re starting point), you might be able to make out some cranes. What for, moving heavy objects? We can’t have that. Grapple on to the side and jump on the catwalk, before throwing some grenades in front of you and jumping off, watching the behemoth topple.
Get a Grenade Launcher
In the first village you come to (just below the Reaper base), grapple on to the large tower in the centre of the little consort of shacks and jump inside. Open the box to find a brand new, shiny Grenade Launcher, with around 20 grenades. Caution: May be extremely fun to use.
Explore a car...on the outside
You’ve probably realized by now that stunt-jumping onto a car allows you to ‘surf’ it. However, by moving the left stick you can explore the car by jumping onto the trunk, the bonnet, the side doors – even cling on to the bumper and shoot behind you.
See Panau by night
“But the demo isn’t set at night!” you say. Wrong. After completing the ‘race’ with the plane, just point your nose and go as high as you can. Over to the north, you should be able to see Panau by night, complete with sparkling city lights. As it turns out, night seems to cover the island progressively. Awesome.
Get a Tank
Remember the Rhino from the old GTAs? Yeah, well, so do Avalanche Studios, it seems, as they’ve put in a tank that bares a streaking resemblance to the classic tank. Just head on over to the military base in the north-north-east (if you’ve done the race mission, it should be on your PDA), get inside, shoot some guards and hunt around. Towards the back of the base there should be an ‘Armoured Car’, complete with miniguns and rockets. Drive it around and cause a lot of chaos.
Hijack a helicopter
While using the tank, you should easily be able to max out the ‘Heat’ meter, provided you sat near settlements. Once you get to around Level 3, helicopters will come knocking, and it takes just a second to get out, grapple on to one, shift your movement with the left stick to the front of the cockpit and hijack the beast. Just try suppress a giggle as you mow down everything in your path with those miniguns.
Blow Up The Bio Tank
With the helicopter, fly on over to the central military base (it’s south of the Reaper base), avoid the SAM missiles and parachute down to the Bio Tank (seriously, you can’t miss it). Jump down into the depth of the silo, and, right at the bottom, find a console marked ‘Overload’. Now for the tricky bit – get out of there. Grapple as fast as you can to the surface, hijack another helicopter that’s come along with the high Heat Level, and fly away fast, only looking back to witness the colossal explosion of metal and green gas as the Bio Tank explodes.
That should keep you entertained for the 30 minute time limit. Oh, but there is one more thing. To the south-east, on a tiny little island, easily visible is a massive black structure, a kind of vast castle for titans. What could it be? We think it’ll be a great place for the final mission (‘Breach The Impenetrable Fortress’ and all that), but we can’t get close enough to see in more detail.
