Reggie's Ambitious Wii Promise Hasn't Been Fulfilled

There have been many quotes in this industry that have turned out to be far from true. And today, we’ve found one from a press release on May 9th, 2006 in which Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime promised something we think he’ll be regretting.

The press release is announcing all the games you can expect for the Wii in the first few months after release. The names ‘Mario’ and ‘Zelda’ are mentioned, which, fair enough is exciting, as they’re two of the most loved characters in the industry.

But then comes this quote from Reggie, who when speaking about the Wii console itself says “It will attract all kinds of players, and thoroughly satisfy the hard-core gamers.” – I will also mention that after that quote, one of the games listed is “a Spongebob Squarepants title from THQ” (later to be ‘Creature from the Krusty Krab’) which isn’t the best start for a console which is supposed to satisfy avid gamers.

Spongebob Squarepants wasn't the best start for a 'hard-core' console

I bought my Wii on December 8th, 2006 and since then, I have not been satisfied by the range of hardcore games on the console. Sure I’ve enjoyed the releases of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. But those are just three titles.

The main reason for this, is because third-party developers had trouble developing for the Wii, which meant Nintendo had to put all their power into a couple of Mario games, and of course the Wii Sports range. Which may very well be fun for a family gathering, but wouldn’t keep an avid gamer amused for longer than thirty minutes at a time, let alone the whole lifetime of the console.

We would love to see the Wii hit full potential, but with Sony bringing a motion controller into the frame for the PlayStation 3, and Project Natal on its way for the Microsoft Xbox 360, it’s hard to see that happening. All we can hope for is that the new Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy games will blow us away.

Can Super Mario Galaxy 2 make avid gamers more confident with the Wii?

The way it’s going, it looks like that’ll be a quote Reggie will be regretting for the rest of his time in the industry.
