The emotional cutscenes in Metroid: Other M are so powerful that story planner and Samus co-creater Yoshio Sakamoto was reduced to tears just watching the filming of a cinematic.
In producing the quality cutscenes of the game's complex emotional storyline, the creative team managed to get a cameraman in to help them film some scenes that would later be turned into CGI. Apparently the scenes - even in that early state - are so emotional that the producers had tears in their eyes.
In-game cinematic director and storyboard artist Ryuzi Kitaura revealed the emotional moment in an interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata:
"Motion capture is primarily a method of recording movement data. This time, apart from the 52 fixed capture cameras, we also had a professional cameraman record the scenes, in order to record the cinematics as they appeared on the storyboards. However, since these were temporary cinematics, we were asking him to shoot things like Samus in tights, or polystyrene creatures, and there was no set to speak of. These are the kinds of things that you usually hate asking professional cameramen to shoot.
"[Sakamoto] stood close to me, checking the monitors. When we'd shoot a particularly moving scene, I'd ask him 'How was that, Sakamoto-san?', but he'd be completely silent - again... I was really worried, thinking 'Oh no, he doesn't like it...', but then when I peeked at his face, his eyes were full of tears... the cinematic did show Samus in tights."
Sakamoto responded by reminding Kitura, "...but weren't you crying as well, Kitaura-san?
"Well, your tears were infectious, Sakamoto-san!"
The long wait for Metroid: Other M ends in just a cuple of weeks.
