Would be a distraction.

Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton has said he would become "very distracted" if the firm’s next home console was to be unveiled in 2012.

Recent months have seen claims emerge that the platform holder is gearing up to announce the PlayStation 4 sometime this year, but, after quotes from Tretton during an IGN interview, it seems highly unlikely.

"In terms of when you talk about [the next generation] and when you announce it, it really depends on the health of the existing platform and the other things you have going on," he said. "And right now, we're focused on PlayStation 3, and I've got another platform (PlayStation Vita) to get out the door in seven days, so I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology anytime soon.

"I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride, and Vita, which really deserves a dedicated push from us."

He added: "I, quite frankly, would be very distracted if I had to be talking about next generation hardware this year."

It’s also been speculated that Microsoft will unveil its Xbox 360 successor in the coming months – possibly at E3 in early June – likely meaning that, as last month’s comments from PlayStation France boss Philippe Cardone indicate, Sony will be the last to announce its next generation home console.
