Why Heavy Rain Will Fail

Saturday, 6 Feb 2010 - 13:33PM

In our new feature, the Connected Consoles team will be taking an up-and-coming game and presenting two different points of view; why the game will rock, and why the game will fail. Remember, these are the views of the individual writers; you can agree with one of them, both, or neither. This is not a review, but a view of the game before we even play it.

Read James' views on why the game will rock here.

The views of Chris Hawke on why Heavy Rain will fail;

I know. How brave I am. Putting myself on the line like this. You see, even hinting that your hype meter isn’t ticking away like an over-excited Geiger counter about Heavy Rain instantly puts you in front of the firing squad. “Oh, you just don’t get it”, they say. 'You just hate it because it isn’t an FPS'. 'Yeah, I can see why you don’t like the look of it; some people just don’t understand beautiful art'.

Heavy Rain has gained an almost religious following. And while they all bow down to their burning wicker men, I’m left in the bushes, looking on, feeling left out, and cold. And naked. But that’s a different story for a different time. So, why does everyone seem so excited for Quantic Dream’s Fahrenheit-a-like? I honestly don’t know. Here’s why I’m just not bothered about Heavy Rain.

The fact it doesn’t have guns is seen by many as a plus. I have to agree, if Madison Paige were wondering around her apartment with an AK-47 (With red dot sight, duh), it would detract a little something from the feel of the game. But it’s not about the gun. It’s what the gun represents; fun. An objective. A thing to use. A tool, if you will. Because, as much as David Cage will disagree, Heavy Rain will just be a series of Quick Time Event-using mini-games. There, I said it. Shoot me. You can argue as much as you want that its art and that you don’t need guns to keep things interesting, but at the end of the day – you do such things as help your son with homework, change a baby’s diaper and buy a balloon. That’s not fun.

The only thing that would make it fun and engaging is if there was a reason for doing those things, or a sense of accomplishment and progression gained from them. That’s where the story comes in. It’s got a nice little set up – kids get taken, found dead in rain water, and you have to find who-dun-it. However, publications that have reviewed the game (i.e. OPM) point out that the story is paper thin, Channel 5 nonsense. If that’s true, then what’s the point in all the activities? Why change your baby’s diaper if it’s only going to either not progress the story, or subject your mind to even more Lost-style plot madness (we’re talking Season 5, oh-my-god-I-don’t-understand-a-single-thing Lost).

Yes, it has good graphics. Yes, it has a range of characters, and at least a little bit of atmosphere. But if you look past the ‘Oh, isn’t it art’ stuff, you’re going to be spending 10 hours or so completing meaningless, mind-numbing and out-of-context tasks with no sense of complete or advancement. And face it; some parts of the game are just an excuse to flash some next-gen tit.

Woozywonks - the fact that you dismiss a game just because you can't shoot people in the face proves one thing. You are a pre - pubescent moron who's only interest is playing games he's too young for and bragging to all the other kids in primary school about how blood is "Awezomes". Don't you know playing grown - up games when your mommy isn't looking is naughty? If she catches you, you'll get grounded again. GET A LIFE!

aww DAVID M... you find buying a balloon more fun than shooting someone in the face? GET. A. LIFE.

Normally I wouldn't register to make a comment but this is an exception. If you Chris Hawke have never played Indigo Prophecy then in my option you need to check it out; if at all possible. This was the foundation for Heavy Rain, (sort-of-speak) This game is one of a kind; actually it's almost like Shinmeu on Dreamcast but that's digging for barred treasure. N-e-ways Indigo Prophecy introduced new concepts and took a way different approach to getting to its goal. It was an amazing game, one that should have gotten more attention but didn't. Now I can't sit here and say that you are flat out wrong because you do make some good points about the changing a diaper or buying a balloon but this is what helps create a story to remember in a different light vs the same old same old. Regardless of what everyone else says when it comes out and if you get to play it and beat it then you will know if its a good game or not. And if you're the type of person that looks for guns to make a story worth wild or the same cliche that have been used to build the gaming industry then it's time for you to retire. This is the future and there will be more to come. Only forwards not backwards.

Heavy Rain will be good because it's trying to break the mould. It's trying to give players a deep, compelling story that they can not only get sucked into but actually affect the outcome of. It's a vast improvement over generic, boring FPS games like Halo where they throw the script out the window for favour of a few extra weapon customisations. In Halo you're given a gun and told to "Shoot aliens for the high score.", i don't find that very fun...........in fact, i find it a whole lot less fun than buying a baloon or participating in a QTE. Heavy Rain is shaping up to be a strong contender for GOTY and it's because of the direction it's taking, not because it has boob.

Ok... well done, you actually made me register to comment... So 10/10 on getting your job done ;) You mention that the game to you is nothing but a series of quick time events, and i do accept that... I am excited for this game, not for game play, but the story and immersion... When you watch a good movie, all you do is sit on a seat and watch a movie, and you come out impressed, excited, hyped for such a good movie.. Well this is the attitude for this game, you having one great story and actually get to participate on the turn out of the game... I shall not call you immature, because everyone has their own view for this game... However, you are probably are right... you just don't get it...

Nintendo is selling a ton of games where you "just change diapers" and people have fun with those games.

Well chris, i know you say it is just quick time events, and mini games, maybe it is, but there all done in a way that hasn't been seen in previous games, it's also more of a mature game that is bound to appeal to older audiences and not just another FPS or an excuse for mindlessly shooting people, as James said it's something different, and that's what will attract people. It's not going to become boring soon, unlike most FPS's that do, because it's all been seen before.
