Red Dead Redemption Development 'Gruelling' - Houser

Rockstar Games’ Dan Houser has described the development period of Red Dead Redemption as “long, gruelling and enormously challenging”

The western adventure title has been in development for over five years, and now that a release date is close, the industry giant can start to re-focus its sights on other projects in development which include L.A. Noire, Agent and Max Payne 3.

“You simply could not make a game like Red Dead Redemption until this point – vast open areas of rolling wilderness, a complex, living ecosystem, a massive array of characters, side-quests all flowing together” said Houser, in issue 94 of games™ magazine.

“This project has been long, gruelling and enormously challenging for us” he later admitted, “despite our massive experience at making open-world games”

Red Dead Redemption – after multiple delays – is set to release for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 on May 18 in North America. PAL regions can get the game from May 21.

I've always wanted a good western game, but since I've only gotten into gaming recently I haven't had a chance to go back and play the first Red Dead game. I'm actually glad to hear that development was long and gruelling, not because I want others to suffer but because I'm assuming that they [Rockstar] have poured their hearts into this game, similar to how NaughtyDog worked themselves non-stop like crazy and once Uncharted2 released all of that effort really showed. It'd be great if all of Rockstars' hard work proved worthwhile and Red Dead turns out incredible! I simply cannot wait for this game to release! I noted that in one of IGN's latest podcasts one of the hosts mentioned how he'd played RedDeadRedemption at PAX East and he fell in love with it, saying "it's definitely a Game of The Year contender". Let's hope it's not just his opinion :D
