EA: Best 2010 Publisher Already?

Monday, 7 Dec 2009 - 16:13PM

Looking through EA Games’ upcoming games list, you can really see how the publisher could already be the best videogame publisher of 2010. The list includes;

The list of games below is not in any particular order.

EA have since officially announced Dead Space 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Army of Two: The 40th Day
Release Date: Jan 8 (EU), Jan 12 (US)

It’s just over a month till the cooperative duo return to the scene with the sequel to the all-but-average original. This time however Tyson and Rio are in Shanghai, in which mayhem surrounds them. Personally I didn’t find the original interesting enough to keep me away from Modern Warfare. However, EA are out to change that, with some brilliant visuals and scenarios.

Mass Effect 2
Release Date: Jan 29 (EU), Jan 26 (US)

I have a confession. And you might want to sit down for this. I didn’t like Mass Effect. Put the knife down, and let me explain! Ok, it was good, but the combat was basic, the AI was poor, the story a little cliché, and by god, it took an age to get anywhere. Mass Effect 2 improves on all of those, and then makes them amazing. The combats seems fluid and deadly, the AI is smart and devious, the story is pure sci-fi awesomeness; let’s just hope you don’t have to take an 8-minute elevator every half-hour. It’s probably the most anticipated game from EA in 2010.

Dante's Inferno
Release Date: Feb 12 (EU), Feb 9 (US)

If you’ve seen gameplay of Visceral’s upcoming hack and slash title, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that the game is based on a legendary poem that was first written in 1308. The game is facing a lot of competition in 2010 with Kratos and Bayonetta on the scene, but we’re hoping that the game gives us that little bit extra. A demo will be available on the PlayStation Store from December 10th, whilst the 360 community have to wait that little while longer and will be able to test the game from December 24th.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Release Date: March 5 (EU), March 2 (US)

I’m lucky to say that I was one of the first people in Britain to play Bad Company 2. A Beta of the game started on November 19, exclusively to PlayStation 3 gamers and has since been soaked in praise. EA Boss John Riccitiello has even said that the game “looks like a worthy competitor to Modern Warfare." And we agree. The game has stunning visual affect’s, an excellent multiplayer mode which is sure to compete with that of Modern Warfare’s, and who can forget the witty humour that we all loved in the original.

All Points Bulletin
Release: TBC

We’re still not sure what’s going on with Realtime Worlds MMO, though we’re still pretty sure it’s coming to Xbox 360 after Realtime said “APB will be coming out as planned in 2010 but sadly not for Xbox 360 at the same time." It’s been in development for a long time now and was originally set for a 2005 release. The designer of the game has worked on Lemmings, Crackdown, and some instalments of the Grand Theft Auto series, so it should be a solid masterpiece. Hopefully.

EA SPORTS MMA
Release Date: TBA 201

The reason I loved UFC 2009 is because before, I has absolutely no interest in Mixed Martial Arts. What, sweaty, bulky men get in an octagon (8 sides? How did they think of THAT?!) and put their heads rather too close to the others private regions until one of them gets his teeth blown out by a mega punch. That’s going to make a great game, right? Well, it did, and after hours of addictive gameplay, I love UFC with a passion. Obviously, seeing the general applause and money that surrounded Yukes and their UFC newcomer, EA wanted a slice of the cake. Boo. Surely, UFC 2009’s control scheme was the only control scheme that works. Surely, you can’t have many other ways to present an octagon with two men fighting in it. Surely, UFC, like FIFA to Pro Evo, will have all the official stuff, with more fighters? While it’s not been accepted well by many gamers, remember we have yet to see any gameplay. If EA MMA can actually surpass UFC 2009, then they deserve all the money and praise that comes with it.

Crysis 2
Release Date: TBA 2010

Crysis looked good. Like, super awesome good. Show those textures to gamers 10 years ago and you’d have been burnt at the stake for being a witch. On the gameplay side, it was playable – but rather uninspiring. So, EA have two mammoth tasks to achieve; bring those incredible graphics to console, and spice up the shooting. Reckon they can pull it off with CryEngine 3?

RAGE
Release Date: TBA 2010

The game was announced back in 2007 and since then, we haven’t heard much about id Software’s post-apocalyptic FPS racer. It must be a good sign however, as it means the legendary Doom developer are keen to make the game as good as it can get. Sure people have said it’s similar to Fallout 3, and Borderlands for that matter, but that’s not a bad thing at all. We really can’t say much about the game until we see some fresh gameplay.

Skate 3
Release Date: May 2010

Skate and Skate 2 were extremely popular with the press and of course, the gamers. However, I think Skate 3 is the weakest EA game of 2010. Since the first couple of trailers were released, the gaming community haven’t responded to the game ecstatically, with people saying it looks fun, but not visually outstanding. I’m sure it’ll do well, but with this brilliant list of games, it’s going to be hard to get anywhere near top spot.

Medal of Honour
Release Date: Fall 2010

Here’s something you might not have known; the original Medal of Honour (Here in the UK, we like to throw extra vowels in) came out roughly the same time as Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ album Californiacation. So? Well, due to hours of pwning Nazis and having the album on repeat (It’s what we did in the 90s), it quite hard to forget those early days of the frankly incredible MoH – It was to shooters in those days what Modern Warfare was in ’07. The thought of a more realistic take on Call Of Duty is something that brings me back to 1999, and those happy, lazy days, but also gets me excited for a really, really good game. Just from the box art, you can tell EA mean business, and if they pull this off; they can do anything.

Dead Space 2
Release Date: Expected Fall 2010

Stock up on fresh underpants. Dead Space 2 is inevitable after the excellent original, as well as the teaser 'listing' in a recent magazine. And it’s going to be really, really freaky. Dead Space near flawlessly mixed superb shooting mechanics, great atmosphere and some actual scares, in a time when horror games were going through a bit of an identity crisis (another zombie jumping out at me? really?). Dead Space 2 has room to ramp up the gore, ramp up the horror, and ramp up how often you wash your clothes.

EA also have some unannounced projects which will no doubt be released including FIFA 11, NBA Live 11 and Madden NFL 11.

The California based publisher has had a decent 2009 with titles such as Dragon Age: Origins, FIFA 10 and Skate 3, and with this list of games, the team here really believe EA will triumph in what will be one of the greatest years in videogaming history.
