Layoffs are confirmed to have hit id Software, but parent company Bethesda has downplayed its decision to let some employees go.

In a statement to GameSpot, the firm said the layoffs are part of “standard business practice,” as it looks to ensure the studio has “a workforce that meets the needs of the studio.”

"id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated,” it adds.

The Texas developer is of course the team behind standout first-person shooter franchises Doom and Quake, as well as its latest title, RAGE, which released October last year and impressed many.

Work has begun on a fourth Doom title.
